The other day I was going through my wardrobe. The sudden change of weather from cold to the feeling of sunshine and warmth, made me look for my shorts that I hadn’t seen in a while. And while I was wading through knitwear and feeling optimistic that I could finally move my jumpers to the top shelf, I thought I’d start sorting through my clothes.
I like to watch You Tube videos on fashion amongst other things. Topics such as “what I wore this week”, “5 items you really need in your summer wardrobe” and “what people are wearing in Rome” often flash up as click bait. And I click.
After being told by an influencer that I need a ‘capsule’ summer wardrobe, watching impossibly gorgeous everyday Italians strut in the streets like they are on a runway and seeing what wardrobes mistakes I’m apparently making being a women over a certain age, I’m convinced I need to make changes.
Looking in my wardrobe, it seems that the contents are all wrong. I find a few items that I’ve bought and have never worn; denim vest and a short winter red coat with a rather large collar, that I bought on sale. And then there’s the gold jacket I bought that begs to go out more than the two times I’ve worn it.
While I search for inspiration and try to remember the many new ‘rules’ I’ve learned, I realise a few things. One, that some items I bought were impulse purchases. Two, that they were bought after watching an ‘inspirational’ video and without proper planning. And three, they never felt like me.
The same can be said for interiors. We get bombarded by images, videos and well meaning advice from friends and family on what sofa to buy.
It made me appreciate how confused some clients can feel when they contact me. With all the noise, it can be really overwhelming to know where to start. And then to discern what they want in their homes. For me, that’s where starting with a feeling can help. A feeling is more personal and more robust when it comes to dealing with outside noise and trends. Once you have a sense of that, it is easier to distinguish between something you admire and something that genuinely belongs in your home (and in your wardrobe).
I’ve since been more deliberate in what I’m watching so I don’t fall into the trap of buying something because it’s trendy or I was told I needed it. And I now understand that I already have my own style and that’s ok. I’ve also realised that I was being too optimistic with my wardrobe - my jumpers have slowly migrated from the top shelf, now that the warmer weather has disappeared, for now.
New Project — Inner City Suburb
I’ve been working on a beautiful new apartment in an inner city suburb. My clients had moved from interstate into a newly built apartment to be close to their adult children. With a mattress, bedhead and a coffee table, they needed help creating a vision for their new home, sourcing new pieces and pulling it all together. And it’s done. Now it’s time for the professional photos. In the meantime, here’s a few from my iPhone. Stay tuned!
