ON TRENDS

I’m at that age now, where I’ve seen a trend repeated. Something that I wore years ago, is now being ‘reinvented’.
For those that hadn’t seen the trend before, it is something new. My teenage daughter is currently swooning over and purchasing the clothes that are reminiscent of those I wore in the 90’s. Snug fitting plain white t-shirts, baggy jeans and leather belts with big buckles. All things I remember. Since the 90’s I’ve seen (and worn), slim belts, graphic slogan t-shirts skinny jeans. And back it comes. But for my daughter, it is new (and for me, I regret ever donating any of my clothes!)
But it’s made me think about trends. They are hard to avoid, whether it’s fashion, in the home or just societal behaviours. We get drawn into them whether it’s because of FOMO (fear of missing out), lack of choice or just because it’s available.
Trends can be good. They do help us feel refreshed. Seeing the new season colours come in the fashion departments while you are walking through David Jones, can lift your spirits. But it can also make you feel that you are daggy or unfashionable if you don’t rush out and buy that new yellow jacket.
I believe that trends for trends sake, aren’t useful. They can take away the essence of who you are and make you feel overwhelmed. For me, the key is staying true to what you like. And how items make you feel, whether it’s a red sofa or a pair of baggy jeans.
Trends should inspire and not dictate.
What’s new
Part of my job is seeing all the new items that are being released by my suppliers. Whether it be fabric, furniture or art. It’s a fun part of the job! Most suppliers host a presentation a few times a year, keeping designers updated on their ranges. Each supplier will have their own point of view on a design direction. Here’s some snaps of what I’ve seen recently from one of my suppliers. They aren’t known for colour but do focus on contemporary forms, use of materials such as stones and muted sophisticated tones. For me, the best outcomes are when pieces are used from different suppliers so your home doesn't look like a showroom. To get an idea, have a look at some of my projects.
