HOW TO DOWNSIZE WITHOUT DISCOMFORT

It is often said that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can go through. In 1967, a landmark psychological study called the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, officially proved it, ranking a ‘change in residence’ as a major life stressor.

Decades later, nothing has changed. Just ask anyone who has moved! But when you are  downsizing, the stakes are even higher. You aren't just moving your physical belongings. You are navigating a massive emotional shift. Leaving a family home of decades is sad. Years of memories, raising children, celebrating milestones and quiet everyday moments, can feel like they are being left behind.

Then comes the physical stuff. How do you decide what to keep when you can’t keep it all? And how do you get your adult children to finally collect the relics they’ve conveniently left in their old bedrooms?

And then there’s the anxiety of the new space. “How am I going to fit?” and “Will my beautiful old furniture look completely out of place?” are common questions.

I see this emotional tug of war all the time. It is incredibly hard. But as an interior decorator, I can help make your transition a little easier. Here is how we can tackle it together:

  • Furniture placement: I can review your new floor plan to map out if current furniture pieces will fit, where they should go, and how to maximize every square metre.

  • Blending old with new: I integrate your most cherished antique or vintage pieces with smart, modern items so your new home feels beautifully evolved and collected.

  • Smart zoning: Smaller footprints require clever thinking. I can create distinct zones so a room can efficiently double as a guest space, a reading nook or a hobby area.

  • Preserving your identity: We will identify the items that hold memories and give them pride of place so your new house instantly feels like home.

Whether you need guidance before you pack a single box, or styling help after you arrive, I can step in at any stage. (And yes, I can even tell your adult kids it's time to clear out their rooms!) Here’s how I have helped:

We asked Katie for help when downsizing from our home of 50 years to a retirement apartment. We wanted our apartment to be attractive, comfortable and restful, in fact a haven. Katie sourced everything we required from furniture, soft furnishings, lighting, bed linen, art work and then finally styled the apartment.
Katie always listened to our goals, was very thorough and through her contacts was able to save us money. More importantly Katie succeeded in making our move a manageable and enjoyable experience.

A client’s experience

I bought a new apartment, it was a blank canvas. I had no idea where to begin. Katie opened my eyes to colours and furnishings I wouldn’t have considered. Our discussions and shopping expeditions were a delight and the end product amazing.I’m so glad I had Katie to travel this journey with me, she made what I thought would be hard work into a fabulous experience.I have had friends visit and tell me how much the apartment depicts my personality. I have Katie to thank for that, she has the ability to know what you would like. I now have a beautiful apartment which welcomes me every time I come home.
